This was inspired by my friend and former coworker, Liz, who educated me about the true nature of where rainbows come from. Besides containing a wealth of completely scientific information on rainbows, she has an obscene collection of other esoteric knowledge and obscure historical facts. She is also a fantastic illustrator and designer, and I highly recommend checking out her blog. You will see many pretty pictures and you may even learn a thing or two.

I love Los Angeles and it's been fun living and working here, but for the right job I'll move, and getting paid to draw and animate all day ain't a half bad gig. I took an awesome character design class over at CDA taught by David Colman. This is some of the cleaned up work organized into model sheets and some beat boards I threw together. I did tailor some changes in the character design between the boards and the model sheets. I do like the final look better as it's a little more streamlined and clean.

TOMBO Brush Pens

Di gave me a TOMBO brush pen to play with yesterday and I think I'm in love with it. I feel kinda stupid that I never used them before. These things are an illustrator's best friend. They can fill page area quickly and can provide both accurate and robust lines with minimal effort. The line quality is far better and faster than anything that a Photoshop brush can do. Here are some doodles that I did with it:

Painting on Carboard is Fun!!!

Here's a nice piece I made this weekend:

I always have this idea of painting on cardboard boxes and never do, so as a result I have a ton of cardboard boxes sitting around my apartment. This weekend, I actually sat down and got to it, and I'm quite pleased with the results. The combination of black and white on brown, is both mellow and high contrast, and carboard has a natural texture and grain to it. It also has a very impermanent and gritty feel, which is another thing I really like. I'm going to have to make point to do this more often.

Here's a monster I created recently. I was playing with shapes and arrived at the shell, and then built the body out of the shell. I don't know if it really works that well as a concept design. The shell is far too large and ungainly for a creature with such spindly limbs. I imagine this creature would merely fall over. Maybe I'll try again later

Here's a nice little Illustrator project I finished a few weeks ago. I haven't done any vector art in awhile so I think it turned out quite nicely.

I made this drawing a few months ago and my crew liked it a lot. I entertained the idea of using it for a Vanguards logo/ T-shirt design, so I thought I'd vector it out and see how it looks cleaned up. Not bad eh? I'm thinking maybe I'll submit this to Threadless and see if it'll sell.

Caricture Series #1 Jason

Lately I've been really bad at motivating myself to make art so I've deemed that more aggressive measures are necessary. I've decided to give myself topics to draw about, things that will hopefully inspire me, the first of which is going to be caricatures of my friends. So here's the first of what will hopefully turn into a series.

This is my friend Jason. In addition to being one of the most talented musicians I've ever met and having funky hair, he's an extreme sneaker fanatic. One time we told him that we had won a pair of the limited edition Coraline Dunks that Nike released for the movie... And then we handed him an empty shoe box... This is what his face looked like:

Of course we were just kidding and gave him the dunks afterward, but his immediate, involuntary reaction was pretty priceless. A look of abject horror and sadness followed by an aftertaste of "why would you ever do this to me?" Sorry we made you suffer Jason, but the cheap laugh was too good, and besides you have a bajillion shoes anyway.

Introductions and Explanations

Way back about a year ago some of my fellow animators said to me, "Hey you should start a drawing blog." Why? "Because we're professional artists and that's just what we do." I proceeded to go on my computer and create this blog site and the did absolutely nothing with it. I mean who has time for this shit? Not only do I have to laboriously sort through my drawings, but then I have sit and scan then into my computer and upload them to the web! YUCK! Then I graduated from school and now that I'm gainfully unemployed I decided to get my butt in gear. Now, almost a year later, I present the long overdue first post:

I figured this one was a good one to start with. Truth be told I have a shit ton of pencil sketches everywhere, in no particular organized fashion and I always thought it would be good if I took some into Photoshop to be painted. I wanted to try a different style of painting than I normally would do. I guess it sort of works? Maybe not. Here's what the original looked like:

Is it a good idea to have a drawing blog? Yea, probably. It's a easy way to quickly showcase work, and it gives incentive to stay productive and draw often. It also makes it seem like I'm actually doing something with my life connected to animation which is nice too.
